This Week ’s Question : I’ve been forgetting names of people lately and I have this dread that this is an early symptom of Alzheimer ’s . How can I tell ?

The scary truth is that Alzheimer ’s begins with difficulty remembering the familiar — masses , thing , event . Or , you begin consume trouble doing simple arithmetic in your heading . These vexation are common to senior with tidy mastermind , so most of us do n’t get too worked up over them .

But , as Alzheimer ’s forward motion , it can make citizenry forget how to sweep their teeth or change channels on a TV . And it gets worse until patients want over forethought .

That ’s a personal judgment call . I ’ve found that I ca n’t remember the names of movie mavin and baseball player the fashion I used to . I impute this to what I call the " overladen filing cabinet . " As we get older , we accumulate so many memories that it ’s out of the question to find the one we want .

I ’m not sufficiently worried about my memory difficulties to cite them to my Dr. . But if you are worried , get test .

The available tests include a thoroughgoing physical , neurological , and psychiatric evaluation . A medical history will probably be taken . This history includes information about use of music , dieting and retiring medical condition . Blood and piddle tests may be done . There are also genial tests of memory , job - solving and spoken language . A brain CT scan could be ordered .

If you ’re having some computer memory relapsing , go to the Doctor of the Church with a plus attitude . The fact is that many dissimilar aesculapian consideration may get Alzheimer’s - like symptom . Some of these aesculapian term may be treatable . You could be suffering from the effects of a high fever , dehydration , poor nutrition , reaction to medicines , thyroid gland trouble or a minor head accidental injury .
