The modern age has brought one of the most nightmarish inventions in all of human history — the atomic turkey . These weapons harness the business leader of physical science , free an immense amount of energy from a relatively little amount of mass to render abysmal fire , disease , and death . They have the power to end the reality as we roll in the hay it .
But despite our weaponry , it ’s really only ourselves ( and other living kind ) that will receive the brunt of the harm . The Earth itself will remain an approximate heavens , 25,000 stat mi around . humankind simply do n’t have the firepower to put down the Earth itself . Technically .
On this week’sGiz Asks , we asked scientists about the limits of these arm by answering , theoretically , how many thermonuclear warhead it would take to mail the Earth spiraling off its orbit and into the Sun , and if that ’s at all possible . We also talked about what the true shock of set off the planet ’s nuclear warhead could be .

Without being clever about it : All you would require to do is suddenly finish the Earth from go . Then it just fall in .
Earth kinetic energy ( Ed musical note : the energy of the Earth orbiting the Sun ) equals half the Mass of the ground times its orbital velocity squared , around 1040 ergs . ( Ergs is a unit of vigour ) . The Yield from thestarfish primetest was 1 megaton of TNT ( around 1022 erg ) . Taking the ratio , you find that you need 600,000,000,000,000,000 nuclear weapons .

Curiously , gravitational hold push of the Earth ( the Energy to counteract the gravity guard the Earth together ) is 1039 ergs . So if you tried this experiment and amassed the necessary amount of weapons , you would have ~10 multiplication the get-up-and-go take to explode the Earth . Pretty interesting .

The kinetic vim of the Earth in its domain is :
E = ½ mv2 = ½(6 x 1024 kg)*(30,000 m / s)2 or approximately 3 x 1033 Joules , where m is Earth ’s mass and v is its speed around the Sun .

The zip of a 1 megaton turkey is Ebomb = 4 x 1015 Joules .
To put the Earth into the Sun , you ’d have to shift the energy of its range by an appreciable fraction of its current Energy Department , so you ’d ask roughly E / Ebomb = ( 3 x 1033)/(4 x 1015 ) bombs , or more or less 1018 megaton dud , i.e. , a billion billion big bombs . This calculation assumes all the Department of Energy of the bomb goes into push on the Earth , which is unrealistic . So the bit of bombs needed is in all probability even gravid than that .

If the largest and most explosive volcanic eruptions on Earth did n’t send us towards the Sun then I am fairly doubtful . I have seen estimates of eruptions being the energy equivalent of hundreds to grand of time the energy of the bomb that scourge Hiroshima , and that is not take into account statement the big ( very rarefied ! ! ) eruption from volcanoes like Yellowstone or Taupo .

I have no expertness in switch erratic celestial orbit . But your proposition seems impossible to me .
However , I do have expertness on how the role of atomic weapons in warfare could change clime . Please seethisandthisfor more info , and watchmy TEDx talkorBrian Toon ’s . When city and industrial areas are aim , the blowup would start fires . The smoke from the fires would go up into the stratosphere above the atmospheric condition , and would last for long time . It would block out the Sun , hold it cold , moody , and ironic at Earth ’s surface , while also destroying ozone and allowing more UV to get through the surface . The amount of mood change and UV would depend on the number of artillery , their target , and how large the weapons are . We have calculated that a warfare between the US and Russia would make atomic wintertime , pop most agriculture on Earth and sentencing most people to starvation , and this hypothesis has been validate with recent computation . Even a war between two new , small nuclear major power like India and Pakistan , could bring forth mood change unprecedented in recorded human history , threatening zillion with starvation .

Here ’s what nuclear weapons are really meant for . ( Sorry , but it ’s awful . )
TheUnited States and Russia ownthe huge legal age of atomic weapons , each deploying around 2,000 and proceed another 2,000 in storage . One in five multitude livein one of the 436 cities with a population majuscule than one million , and so a with child percentage of the world populationcould be wiped outusing less than one-half of one body politic ’s deployed nuclear weapons .

But even a atomic conflict at a much small musical scale could have devastating effects . A conflict between India and Pakistan that resulted in 100 Hiroshima - sized nuclear bombs being used on large cities wouldkill about 20 million masses outright . A reportby the Physicians for Social Responsibility gauge that the smoke it would create would be carried up into the atmosphere , affect the climate and pattern of precipitation for a decade . This could cause massive famine , leaving a billion or more people at risk of famishment . prevent weapon system with this potentiality is inhumane and outrageous . It ’s really time to find our way of life out of this mess and get rid of them .
