No , it ’s not . Not really . It ’s about a new solidifying of tyke learning about the Ghostbusters legacy and then the old Ghostbusters — the very , very honest-to-goodness Ghostbusters — present up to redo the final stage of the original film , but worse .
Sigh . So what ’s the premiss of Afterlife ?

Egon Spengler , originally act by the late Harold Ramis , has abandoned his unnamed wife and daughter Callie at some gunpoint in the ‘ 90s . Egon , naturally , steals the Ecto-1 and all their ghost - wear out equipment and inexplicably everyone ’s jump suit and heads to the middle of nowhere , Oklahoma . And abandons his family in the appendage , do n’t blank out .

OK . So why does Egon postulate to bequeath his family to deal with whatever ’s happen in Oklahoma ?
No intellect whatsoever , other than the plot requires his granddaughter Phoebe ( Mckenna Grace ) to be altogether ignorant of all things Egon and Ghostbusters so she can lento learn about them through the picture show with help from Egon ’s specter .

Also , is Afterlife a clowning ? This assumption sounds kind of bleak .
It ’s not a comedy . Oh , there are wisecrack , and Phoebe tells some forged laugh to disseminate awkward situations because of her societal anxiety , but this is mostly a deadly serious love letter to the first Ghostbusters movie .
But the first Ghostbusters movie was a comedy . It had some action at law and a few scares and some stake , sure , but it was in spades a funniness .
I ’m well aware ! Because comedians starred in it !
Why does hereafter take Ghostbusters so seriously ?

The last 20 percent is all about the original Ghostbusters , and they ’re the problem .

In multiple style , actually . First , it turns out they ’ve on the QT highjack the picture from the very first . What Ghostbusters : Afterlife really , really want to be is the first Ghostbusters again — not a sequel , the precise same picture — and pit Venkman , Stanz , and Zeddemore against Gozer the Gozerian again . He make do the first part , but there ’s an electrical short , the trap does n’t work , and the purport of the second Dog kills Egon .
Yeesh .
To be exculpated , a Terror Dog spirit herculean enough to murder people is loose , but then inexplicably does absolutely nothing else until Phoebe makes the horrendous decision to open Egon ’s shade trap contain the first Terror Dog , which very intelligibly has a ghost in it . Now , you could say that even though Phoebe has been describe as brilliant , she knows so short about the Ghostbusters she could n’t have have intercourse the potential leg of dislodge the ghost . But Egon ’s smell guides her to the private hiding berth where he stick the ambuscade . Why ? ! What good could that peradventure do anyone ? What possible outcome is there better than the trap remaining safely obliterate and unopened ?

Please let me continue . Somehow , liberate the Terror Dog intent allow both Dogs to fully demonstrate in the real world . They possess the only two grownup in the film , Callie and Gary Grooberson ( Paul Rudd ) , who release Gozer from a different trap made of proton streams that Egon had built . At some point , Phoebe realize Egon ’s plan was to tempt Gozer back to his farm with the captured Dog as bait , and then trap the god in his jumbo sand trap . Do you see the problem here ?

That was not Egon ’s plan . We catch the plan , which was to lure the 2d Terror Dog feel into this gargantuan trap that was so huge it was understandably made for Gozer . But the movie show us that Gozer is safely trap until the Keymaster and Gatekeeper arrive to let it out . Egon knew that , because he build up all of these traps . If he ’d wanted to immobilise Gozer , he would have had to allow Gozer out of the first cakehole beforehand . But Gozer could n’t enter the genuine earth without both Terror Dogs being free first ! None of it make any deuced sentience and it ’s all so the original Ghostbusters can steal the picture show .
What do you mean , “ steal ” the movie ?
Phoebe and Podcast grapple to appropriate a Terror Dog after Gozer is freed , and everyone hightails it to Egon ’s farm to enact his architectural plan he did not plan . Of course it does n’t act upon , but the original trio miraculously usher up in time to save everyone else from Gozer . Phoebe aid out with her proton pack , but it ’s break that she ’s being assisted by the blue-blooded VFX Force ghost of Egon , so it ’s really just the original four . Trevor decide to microwave the go force cells by shooting them with a proton stream , a matter that inexplicably work , and Carrie Coon pull a lever tumbler , but it ’s really just the original four doing the same affair you saw them do in the first movie , but worse .
I still do n’t see the trouble with this .

But I ’m a fan and I liked it . Is that OK ?
It is in the sense that Ivan Reitman and his son Jason made it for you , so why not ? Just pick out that what was made for you to enjoy comes at the cost of everyone else ’s use , because it makes the motion picture tremendously unsatisfying . Afterlife is about the Kid , but we have no idea what happen to them after the struggle . Do they stay in Oklahoma ? Are they still dirt poor ? Does their experience affect them in any mode ? It ’s canonic storytelling ! Plus , they ’re the ones who should have fended off Gozer . I ’d honestly have forgiven a heap of these plotholes if I could have watched these kid succeed where Egon fail .
But …
OK . Imagine watch Star Wars : A New Hope for the first time , but alternatively of Luke needing to blow up the Death Star , Obi - Wan kills Darth Vader and then everybody goes home . in reality , it ’s bad than that . Imagine Luke and Han go to the Death Star to rescue Leia , and Obi - Wan show up out of nowhere , kills Vader , and leaves . There ’s no character development , no fictional character electric discharge .
None whatsoever ?
The closest anyone in the movie fare to having a character discharge is Carrie Coon ’s Callie , who start the movie ( justifiably ! ) hat her father only to discover he in secret have a go at it her . wait , blame Egon . Because the reason Callie decides her deadbeat dad is now wondrous and loving is because Egon ’s ghost eventually go her to his clandestine lab , where he has a collage of pic he ’s secretly take of Callie throughout her entire life . Is n’t that wonderful ?
I feel like you ’re going to say this is n’t fantastic .
Egon abandons his wife and daughter to go to Oklahoma instead of taking them with her . Callie grows up without a begetter , but it turns out her father was take up creep shots of her constantly when he could at any peak have introduced himself . Why ? Why would n’t he do that ? Was he afraid he was being tail by shade that were going to kidnap his girl and apply her against him ? wraith do n’t play like that .

Why did Egon instal a very obvious firepole in his “ mystic ” underground lab ? firefighter employ one because they need to get out of the firehouse promptly to respond to emergencies — so why would Egon need one to get into his lab so quickly ? Also , the floor is one diminished taradiddle down . How much time could a firepole relieve versus a lot of stair that have to be there , because otherwise , people would need to climb up the rod to get out ? Did Egon install it strictly for hokey value ? Ugh .
