Retired Olympic figure skaterMichelle Kwanis joiningJoe Biden‘s presidential campaign.
The Olympic medalist, 38, will serve as the former vice president’s surrogate director, theWashington Postreported on Thursday.
According to thePost,the role involves creating relationships with political officials and celebrities and arranging for them to speak at various campaign events and to the media.
“We are in the battle for the soul of this nation,” he said. “I believe history will look back on four years of this president and all he embraces as an aberrant moment in time.”
In anInstagram poston Thursday, Kwan shared her excitement about the former vice president’s candidacy.
“I’m thrilled that @joebiden announced that he’s running for President!,” she began. “I know that there is already a field of incredible democratic candidates and the 2020 election is so important we cannot lose sight of the big picture. Ultimately, I believe that the Vice President is the ideal candidate to unify our country with his experience, knowledge and track record of fighting for Americans.”
“He has tackled climate change and pollution to protect our environment,” she added. “He has earned the respect of the international community and, through his leadership, he will strengthen our relationships with our allies and stand up to meet rising global challenges.”

“Most importantly,” Kwan continued, “VP Biden has a reputation for getting things done — from implementing the most comprehensive and progressive investments in our nation’s infrastructure and clean energy industries, to writing the Violence Against Women Act, to taking on the the NRA and winning (twice!).”
“He’s the candidate that I’m proud to support because he will do what it takes to restore the soul of this nation, rebuild the backbone of the country, and unify America,” she finished.
Kwanpreviously worked for Hillary Clintonduring Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
“Every day, there’s been something exciting,” she told PEOPLE of the gig in 2016. “It’s [like] the buildup to the Olympics or the World Championships, where we’re all working towards that goal,” she added of her coworkers. “We have each other’s back, we have a common goal, to get Hillary elected.”
Asked if she’d ever run for office herself, Kwan gave PEOPLE an unequivocal answer.
“No,” she insisted. “This is it!”
