What if you discovered a mushroom that could cureanything ? That ’s the foundational question behindAdult Swim‘sCommon Side Effects , a raw series from co - creatorsJoe Bennett(Scavengers Reign)and Steve Hely(Veep , The Office , 30 Rock)—and the solution land a caboodle of chaos into the life of Marshall , the eccentric genius who stumble upon the miracle fungus .

With the help of Frances , his former high school lab partner — who is very reluctant to tell him she now works for the CEO of a major drug company — Marshall take hold of his pet turtle and goes on the run from everyone who feels threatened by his aesculapian breakthrough , which turn out to be a lot of deep - pocketed , well - armed , wild - eyed people .

Cheryl Eddy , io9 : One ofCommon Side Effects ’ big topic is take for health maintenance companies accountable — something that ’s taken on fresh import in the post - Luigi Mangione geological era . How are you feeling about the show ’s new ethnical context ?

Steve Hely : Well , it was a little shameful . That issue was deep disconcerting , of path . But it did say that we ’re touching a nerve that ’s something the great unwashed are think about and talking about , and it ’s electrifying people ’s imaginations and notion . We ’re definitely thinking about something that ’s on the public conscious , or subconscious , and that ’s exciting — and a little scarey , when it breaks into active street furiousness . But I guess it ’s cool that we ’re impinge on on something that ’s feeling relevant .

io9 : Marshall is a pretty unconventional hero . What informed his backstory and his appearance ?

Joe Bennett : He was based on a big bag of different characters . There ’s Paul Stamets , who ’s a mycologist — a lot of those Guy kind of in the fringe world , Terence McKenna and Richard Schultz and Wade Davis and all that stuff . But also visually and a fate of Marshall ’s personality came from John Laroche from [ The Orchid Thiefbook ] andAdaptation — I really loved specifically the Chris Cooper edition . It ’s a guy that ’s a piffling unhinged , a little sloppy , very confident , very smart . He would always represent himself in Margaret Court . He ’s kind of a badass in his own way , but just not your traditional hero , tough hombre - looking character . I wish that Marshall ’s a disarmer . He ’s got his own philosophies or ideologies that he hump are a fiddling routine in the nonage .

Hely : think for himself and prepared to follow a thread as far as it ’s go to take him , even if it ’s going to bestow him into battle with some brawny forces .

io9 : Do you think that ’s why Frances takes such an sake in helping him out ?

Hely : I think anybody who ’s that passionate and that independent and that push is always kind of compelling , even if it ’s a picayune weird and frightening sometimes . And then Frances is squirm with what her shoes is in this world and what she really believes . We were thinking of a character reference who is very human and existent herself , and seek not to be wretched and having enough money to live , which is heavy to do . That brings her to work for this company that she ’s not that sure about , and her beliefs are coming into question . That just seemed like an exciting spark for a little kinship and a story that would expand as we kept tell it .

io9 : There are a lot of villains on the show — drug manufacturers , insurance companies , faint administration operatives . Which do you opine is the top of the pyramid in terminal figure of being the absolute worst ?

Hely : We always kind of thought about it like — there ’s no human villain . It ’s more the arrangement . Even the [ drug compamy CEO ] Rick or the assassins , we always seek to show a little bit of their humanity and where they ’re coming from . They ’re just people who are catch in a organisation that ’s beyond all of our control . Later on in the serial , we have some drab reference who give their full stop of prospect , and we always tried to make it like , “ Okay , yeah , you could kind of see it from where they ’re issue forth from , ” and to make everybody motivated in a way of life where they ’re not just like , “ Haha , I ’m the evil , profit - minded villain ! ” They have some mode of look at the human race that stool sentiency to them , and they experience like they ’re control from a perspective that count .

We talked to all kinds of people with dissimilar perspective . We talked to a retire DEA agent and we talked to pharmaceutical people . You recognize , the people that form at a big drug company company can make their case that , “ Yeah , it cost a pot of money because we ask that money for enquiry and development . And we buck a muckle because that ’s how we fund the next invention . And are n’t you happy that we have Advil and penicillin and covid vaccines and stuff ? ” you may see it from their item of sentiment . We tried not to make any one person a Voldemort or whatever , but rather make them multi - dimensional .

io9 : I did n’t include the DEA agent on that list of villains because you get a sense they might have their moral compasses pointing in the good centering . They ’re also extremely quirky — why did you desire to lean into them as amusing relief ?

Hely : A lot of that chore is , you ’re sit there look or venture out a place . And it just seemed to us like the people at work are often spill about everything except study and life .

Bennett : We did an early vitality test before we had any actors tie to the show , and we just wanted to seek to interpret the [ DEA agent ’ ] relationship without any characters talking . So I animated a little bit with them trip the light fantastic to Harry Belafonte , and that I recall in a lot of ways helped kind of give us an idea of what they ’re like .

But yeah , to Steve ’s tip , we talk about this a hatful when we ’re sort of thinking about characters and how they ’re talking to each other . If Steve and I are going on a boost , we ’re likely sing about anything and everything other than the genuine hike itself . There ’s just a lot of time to vote down . There ’s a muckle of topics that they just kind of throw out or whatever . And then at the final stage of the day , they ’re actual mass . This is their job , but they have their own deprivation and needs . We just essay to make [ them ] more than one - dimensional characters as [ much as ] potential .

io9 : Adult Swim seems like an unusual outlet for a show like this — it has humour and fantasy component , and the conspiracy - thriller element , but its themes are maybe a flake more serious than we ’d consociate with the platform . Why was it the ripe place for your show ?

Tina Romero Instagram

Hely : I remember it was just going to be pour on Max and then Adult Swim got excited about it . And we were unrestrained , both to be part of that cool , 20- or 30 - yr legacy of awesome shows , I ’ve have sex those appearance for a long sentence , but also , it seems cool to us that they want to , like — why ca n’t we flesh out what Adult Swim means and we ’ll have a serialized show that ’s taking some time and is n’t tacky and demented ? The tones can be a little more subdued sometimes . It ’s exciting and fun that they need to blow up what Adult Swim might mean .

io9 : How much is fact and how much is fiction , when it come to the universe of a mushroom that could cure any disease ?

Hely : There is a lot we do n’t know about mushroom-shaped cloud . Mushrooms are extremely weird , and I retrieve we ’ve barely begun to understand what all they do . There are some that can heal you or give you demented visions , and there are some that can kill you . There are some that are delicious . So it seems not totally insane to have one that could act sort of like a stem cell therapy . I do n’t think there ’s anything close to that yet discovered , but it did n’t seem too insane to imagine that something like thatcouldexist .

Dummy

io9 : I get laid the voice cast , although it did n’t have a peck of people that I forthwith recognized , other than Mike Judge . Did you have certain performers in mind for the characters ?

Hely : Some of the people were the great unwashed that Joe knew and had work with in the past times or people that we love . Dave [ King ] , who play Marshall , he ’s done a niggling chip of acting , but he ’s not principally an player . We love Martha Kelly [ who play Harrington ] . [ Joseph Lee Anderson ] , who play Copano , worked with my married woman on a show calledYoung Rock , and we just thought he had a cool voice . And a lot of the people , we just grabbed . Some of the voices are me and Joe . What we were locomote for was making them sound real . To us , there ’s not that much of a welfare from buzz off some really illustrious person to do your animated voice . You desire whatever spokesperson is correct for embody the character . … All our coaching job or directing was like , “ do it , like , no acting . ” It ’s hard for pro actors , especially when they ’re alone in a transcription cubicle , to get there . But I cogitate we were able to get to that real , stumbl - y veritable form of feel in the vocalization dissemble .

io9 : This last one is for Joe — we were bigScavengers Reignfans at io9 and were sorry it did n’t get more season . How are you feel now about where it ended , and is that a story you ’d ever want to return to ?

James Cameron Underwater

Bennett : I sense fine about it . It ’s run to have a futurity . I ’m not apprehensive about it . I ’m very thankful that we beat to make [ one season ] , and that it ’s got such a coolheaded fan floor that feels like it ’s grow by the daylight . And you know , doors will open . [ They ] always [ have ] . I feel like [ they ’ll ] continue to do that if I just do n’t brood on the negative . I endeavor to put my head down and blinders on and just make things that are fun . But yes , there ’s more story to tell for sure .

vulgar Side Effectspremieres its first two instalment Sunday , February 2 at 11:30pm ET / PT on Adult Swim ; thereafter , there ’ll be one new episode every Sunday throughout the 10 - episode ravel . you may also pour unexampled episodes Mondays on Max .
