John Garrett turns out to have been a wondrous baddie for the first season of Agents of SHIELD — both because he misdirect the ideals that SHIELD stands for in a absorbing manner , and because he becomes an entertaining nutbag . But he also leaves me question if these people can still stomach for something good . spoiler ahead …
In the time of year coda of Agents of SHIELD , “ The Beginning of the ending , ” there ’s a funny moment where Nick Fury and Phil Coulson are both confronting John Garrett , who misquotes Nick Fury ’s sage advice : “ A man can action anything when he realizes he ’s become part of something bigger . ” Garrett twists this into “ one man can fulfill anything once he realizes he can be something bighearted . ” In other words , he turns a creed about selflessness into a call for egomania .
When agent of SHIELD start , the pitch in the first episode was that the world has gotten more dangerous after The Avengers — and now we have to keep people safe , by obscure all the alien engineering science and superpowered people off . But that , too , gets turn on its heading in this episode by Ian Quinn , who severalize the U. S. Army memorial tablet that the world has become a dangerous property and what we need is protection . ( In other words , unstoppable remote control - see to it super - soldier . )
The ideals of SHIELD are so well turned upside down into an alibi for power - lyssa and paranoia that it ’s hard to see how the organisation can even live as something positive any more . And yet , this episode ends with Nick Fury do Phil Coulson the raw director of SHIELD and ordering him to rebuild it from scratch .
Which brings us to the other problem that Garrett raises , which is a crusade for concern in the future — Garrett went nuts because he was brought back from the verge of death with a cocktail that included Kree soap . That same Kree goop brought Coulson back from the dead — and in the end of the installment , we see Coulson making the same weird diagram on the glass that Garrett was making earlier in the instalment . ( More on those in a mo . )
But Nick Fury suggests that knowing who you could enumerate on — figuring out the the great unwashed you could really believe , and keep those people around — is what write SHIELD from turning into Garrett ’s nightmare .
Best Nick Fury Cameo Ever
There was a lot of slap-up stuff in last night ’s episode , but it was all eclipse by the awe-inspiring Nick Fury appearance — which probably beat Iron Man for the best Nick Fury cameo of all meter .
Poor Fitz and Simmons are where Ward allow them , slowly fail in a container that ’s been send away into the ocean . ( And they have a endearing scene where they talk about the First Law of Thermodynamics , the fact that zip ca n’t be created or destroyed , and imagine living on as part of a supernova millennia from now . Until Fitz confesses his honey for Simmons , and comes up with a plan to save up her but not himself . This was the odoriferous bit . )
Simmons manages to drag Fitz up to the ocean surface , but then they ’re stranded land mile from anywhere — until Nick Fury descends like a god and rescues them . Even though we know Fury would be in this instalment , I kind of expect him to show up in the last five minutes . Erinyes saves Simmons ( and hopefully Fitz ! ) and then rushes off because Coulson is involved in “ a contravention I might want to weigh in on . ”
Fury ’s intercession is almost too marvelous , but I ’ll take it — particularly since it leads to Coulson getting the big gun he wielded in Avengers . And Fury is there to equaliser Garrett , as they fence whether SHIELD was ever about ego - sacrifice or self - aggrandisement .
In the end , Coulson finally gets to bitch Fury out about take him back from the dead . Coulson says the TAHITI thing was a “ hail Blessed Virgin ” in display case an Avenger give-up the ghost — and Fury says an Avenger did give-up the ghost . Meaning Coulson . And Fury only has a smattering of multitude he trusts , a smaller issue all the fourth dimension — so he needs Coulson alive . Especially now that SHIELD is gone and Fury postulate someone to rebuild it .
The Awesome Cybertech office
Speaking of sexual perversion of SHIELD , this episode offers an awful look at the most dysfunctional version of an evil organization . At first , CyberTech ’s monitor post seems to be just another starting - up , with people talk about intellectual attribute and the irresistible “ incentives software . ”
But then it turns out the people in that office are all supervise super - soldiers through their eye - cameras , founder them instructions and preparing to bodge their heads off if they disobey . And the “ incentive software ” ? Garrett has kidnapped their lie with one , to force them to go along with his sadistic scheme . Nobody ’s ever bend down this incentive .
And the rug gets pull out one more time , when you realize that the “ dealer , ” the office director who you thought was one of the malign masterminds , plough out to be just another dupe , whose married woman was kidnapped .
Skye and May break into these offices and take the supersoldiers offline — reverting them to their default programming of protect Garrett — and then liberal Mike Peterson ’s kid . Thus grant Mike Peterson free will once again , at which item he turns on Garrett .
Ward is not deliver , yay
And in the eye of the CyberTech flak , Ward shows up to take hold of Skye — and gets his ass handed to him by May in a beautiful conflict scene that ends with him having his foot nailed to the floor .
Early in this installment , we see Ward having spartan doubtfulness about Garrett , who ’s do more and more wacky and mouth about seeing the universe and shape of phylogenesis and so on . Ward even asks Garrett if maybe it ’s time to cut their ties with Hydra , since they ’ve catch everything they want from the organization — which seems to suggest that Ward is n’t really sold on the whole “ Nazi superscience ” deal after all .
At one full stop , Ward says that Skye detests him and think he ’s a colossus — but Raina respond that mayhap that ’s just what Garrett made Ward to be . Either Ward can prefer to be something else , or he can hold off for the world to commute and Skye to become a ogre alongside him .
In any case , I was worried for a while there that we were leading up to Ward doing something desperate and saving everyone , thus mayhap position the stage for his redemption at some later date .
But no .
In fact , Ward just gets his ass kicked , and is demand into custody by the U. S. Army and/or what ’s left of SHIELD . And his ass - kicking leaves him in such forged shape that he ca n’t even talk when his former comrades taunt him with the torture ( both intragroup and external ) he ’ll be enduring while they stress to get Hydra intel out of him .
And Coulson state Ward : “ You commit your entire life to a deranged narcissist who never gave a hoot about anyone , and now he ’s dead . You ’ve got the residual of your life to wrestle with the query … who are you without him ? ” And yeah , finally , Ward may come up with an answer to that interrogation that looks moderately like salvation . But not any time shortly .
( And yay for another rug - pull , when Garrett seems to turn himself into an even more unstoppable bionic man , only to be splatted by Coulson . )
And the fact that Fitz and Simmons come so nigh to dying , and we still do n’t have a go at it how well Fitz pulled through , makes Ward ’s redemption reckon a lot longer off . I had sort of assumed that Ward might have left Fitz and Simmons some unclouded way out , or at least a combat chance . But no . He put them in a death trap , and left them to die , and they were supposed to be his friends .
This show gets major points for not sugar - coating it .
Is Raina half-baked too ? Apparently not .
One of the confusing matter about this installment is whether Garrett is unhinged , or just see a plane of reality that nobody else can see . Or both . He emphatically seems to have receive some superpower from the injection of Kree goop — but has he become a deity ? Does he actually see the fabric of the universe and stuff ?
It ’s really hard to tell — those diagram he ’s tie certainly front fancy . And Raina seems impressed with him . On the other hand , he acts deranged , and when Quinn is in the middle of making his sales slant to the army establishment , Garrett ruin everything and eventually murders a full general for no fussy reason .
Raina , meanwhile , seems to know stuff and nonsense for real . For one thing , at the end of the episode , we see her visit Skye ’s real father , who ’s just a unearthly red hand . ( The Red Skull ? One of the Inhumans ? ) Raina is haunt with “ evolution , ” the idea that hoi polloi are going to turn over the next degree of ontogenesis and the world will become novel and super - strange .
( But no mutation , because we do n’t own the right to “ mutants . ” I fuck that we can talk about evolution as long as we do n’t mention mutant . )
So is this madness or penetration ? The resolution to that question probably helps determine whether Fury just put a harum-scarum in charge of SHIELD . Meanwhile , not only is Skye ’s dad now cognisant of her location — but also Raina and Quinn have the Gravitonium , which houses one of the macrocosm ’s most powerful superhumans of all , Franklin Hall .
SHIELD goes back to basics
In the end , the only way to contend with the perversion of SHIELD by Garrett and his ilk is to go back to basics — as Fury set it , the idea of “ protection . ” Either protecting one man from himself , or the intact world from alien invasion . So Coulson gets turn over a toolkit to help him rebuild , and this lead him to a base . Where there ’s another iteration of Koenig ( Patton Oswalt ) — either Eric ’s brother , or his clone , or a LMD . Something .
And now , I pretend time of year two will be Coulson and the ring following Fury ’s roadmap to find stuff they ’ll need , while recruit more mass and build a new organization . I ’m just glad Triplett engender to be part of the essence team now . Because he brings the interference and the Casimir Funk wherever he goes .
