WINNER: Rain Room
I was in London , England this preceding hebdomad and decided to gibe out an art installation called the Random International : Rain Room . As you walk tardily through , the rainfall answer to your movement and presence in the elbow room and begin to move away from you . When you ’re in the midsection of the elbow room , you ’re besiege by rain and it ’s a pretty nerveless experience fend in the middle of a rain storm but not develop pixilated . At the terminal of the room there ’s a really shining light which I was taking movie against and trying to silhouette my Friend “ dancing in the pelting ” . This was shot using a Canon EOS M with a 22 mm f2.0 Pancake lens at ISO200 , f3.2 and 1/80 shutter fastness .

Mission Beach
Here in Mission Beach , San Diego , heavy fog rolls in often during the night and creates a dour atmosphere set to the soundtrack of wave crash just off the path . Everyone here skate and it ’s cool to keep an eye on people appear from nowhere just do disappear into the fog again . I bracket the shots and run away it through HDR Pro in Photoshop using 6 photograph of motley exposures to institute out as much detail as possible . I then flatten the upshot and broadcast it to Lightroom where I increased the highlights to showcase the glowing light , increase the contrast to bring up the blacks and then last line up the noise diminution to smooth out the net shooting . I used a Canon 500D , Canon 50 mm @ f/1.8 , ISO 1600 and multiple shutter speeds from 1/80s – 1/20s .

This ikon was take in Telluride , Colorado , near a ski lift atop a good deal , after ride a car to get there . Being so far off from city calorie-free pollution really allows you to see the never - ending amount of stars in the sky . Termite Flight
I work and live in a really rural area of the DRC with no real electricity ( beyond my office generator ) , so I was having problem thinking of an musical theme for night photography . Then on Thursday the showery season began ! And with it hundred of swarming termites . aright at the start of the rainy time of year , the fly ( or “ alate ” ) caste hatches to reproduce . I occupy this gibe using one of our outdoor fluorescent fixture as the main author of light and then I added a rearward fill - flash , freeze the last second of flight . The strobe - like impression is due to the flicker rate of the fluorescent fixture . I shot the paradigm with an old Nikon d3100 and a Sigma lens ( 135 mm , f4.2 , 1/5 sec , 1600 iso ) . I post processed in Aperture , really punching the ‘ definition ’ lay to give the image some cereal .

Photography can be an expensive hobby . However , it is absolutely potential to take beautiful photograph with cheap , older equipment . It is also absolutely potential to take horrible photos with expensive equipment . Some do n’t realize that the most authoritative piece of equipment a photographer has is his / her imagination . For this challenge , I came up with the concept of contrasting ‘ night ’ with ‘ sluttish ’ . I used an old speedlite from the eighties with a generic wireless twinkling frame-up for this pic . The background is the night sky . I particularly liked how the flash ’s overexposed burst resembles the distaff statue ’s Aaron’s rod from the old black and white intro of Columbia Pictures . The only adjustment in Photoshop was a slight story adjustment to bring out more of the black night background . Panasonic GH1 on tripod , Lumix G Vario 14 - 45 mm , @14 mm , f/3.5 , ISO 125 , 1/125s . , wireless flash on tripod .
